Resident & Family Experiences

LT

Lim Ah Teck

Resident, 78 · Melaka

The food here reminds me of my mother's cooking. Proper Nyonya dishes, not the watered-down version you get in some restaurants. I've put on a bit of weight since coming here, which my children are very happy about. The staff know my name and my preferences — that matters more than I expected.

Noraini Ramli

Daughter of resident · Kuala Lumpur

I live in KL and my mother is at Harmoni Place. The hardest part was trusting someone else to look after her. After the first few weeks, I noticed she was more talkative when I called — more things to talk about. She's joined the handicraft workshop and apparently has made some friends her own age. I genuinely didn't expect this outcome.

Son of resident · Singapore

My father is 81 and quite set in his ways. I was worried he wouldn't adapt. He's been at Harmoni Place for four months now and seems settled — the daily rhythm suits him. He grumbles about the stairs occasionally, but that's just him. The staff are patient with his stubbornness, which I appreciate enormously.

Tan Hwee Lin

Resident, 74 · Cultural Immersion

I chose the Cultural Immersion Programme because I wanted more than just a room. Lee Khim, our coordinator, has been wonderful. She found out I used to embroider traditional patterns years ago and started a small group around it. I've made things I haven't made in thirty years. Some mornings I actually look forward to getting up.

Ahmad Zulkifli

Grandson of resident · Johor Bahru

My grandmother moved to the Veranda Grand Suite after the family visited. She had a clear idea of what she wanted — privacy, good food, and someone to talk to. Harmoni Place delivered on all three. When we come for visits she always seems content, which is the main thing. The family dinner event in January was a genuinely lovely occasion.

Chan Yoke Mun

Daughter of resident · Penang

We visited three different places before choosing Harmoni Place. The others felt more institutional — efficient, but cold. Here it felt like a home that someone had cared for over years. The pricing is clear, nothing hidden, which made the conversation with my siblings much easier. Communication from the team has been consistent and honest.

In More Depth

Three Stories Worth Sharing

Some experiences are worth telling in more detail. These are lightly condensed from longer conversations with family members.

The Challenge

Mdm Wong, 76, had been living alone in her family home in Melaka after her husband passed. Her children, based in Kuala Lumpur, were concerned about her eating irregularly, withdrawing from social contact, and spending most days at home alone.

The Solution

The family moved her into the Cultural Immersion Programme after an introductory visit. The cultural coordinator spent time understanding her background in Peranakan cooking. Within weeks, she was participating in cooking sessions and had become something of an informal expert for the group.

The Outcome

After three months, family members noted a visible improvement in her mood and energy during calls. She began discussing activities and other residents rather than expressing loneliness. Her appetite and weight improved. Her daughter says she "sounds like herself again."

The Challenge

Mr Raju, 80, had retired from a long career in the civil service and struggled with the loss of daily structure and purpose after retirement. His family were concerned about low mood and reluctance to engage socially.

The Solution

His son chose the Heritage Room Package initially, wanting Mr Raju to adjust at his own pace. The consistent daily schedule — meals at set times, regular outings, shared spaces — provided the structure he'd lost. He began joining the weekly heritage walks after the second week.

The Outcome

Six months in, Mr Raju upgraded to the Cultural Immersion Programme at his own request. He now leads informal discussions about Melaka's administrative history during the storytelling sessions. His son says the change has been remarkable.

The Challenge

Mdm Fatimah, 82, had specific requirements: she valued privacy highly, disliked institutional settings, and wanted to remain connected to Melaka's Malay cultural heritage while having personal attention when needed. Standard residences hadn't felt right.

The Solution

Her family arranged a Veranda Grand Suite with her own private outdoor space. The dedicated coordinator worked with her to arrange private Quran recitation sessions and personal excursions to Kampung Morten and the Malay kampung areas of Melaka.

The Outcome

Mdm Fatimah has now been at Harmoni Place for over a year. She regularly hosts family members on her veranda during afternoon tea service. Her family say the suite was the right choice for her temperament and that she seems genuinely settled.
